Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in multiple conversations following England's defeat in the second Ashes against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" comment after his side were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, he revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate future in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
