A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” stated the country's president.
The official announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its role in national projects. They were completed at an rapid pace, beating predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked ongoing concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a full independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."
In reply, the president maintained that the train had been operating in full adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and management of these national initiatives.
