Tetris Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Each time a prominent prize-giving event approaches, one notices a clamor to include of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and fill the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games worldwide continuing this trend for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait 35 years.
